Overview of the Course
CA Foundation exam is the first step for a student after writing 2nd PU/XII exams in the journey of becoming a Chartered Accountant. Student who takes CA Foundation route has a possibility of obtaining Post Graduation within 4 years and there is no any other course in India which can be completed at such short period and also command such respect in the society.
Here is a brief overview:
Eligibility: To register in the CA Foundation course;
1. Should be studying or have completed 2nd PU/XII Science, Commerce or Arts stream.
2. Should have obtained at least 50% marks in 2nd PU/XII.
Duration: The CA Foundation Course consists of four papers and can typically be completed within 6 months of registration. Best time to register for CA Foundation is registering within February month before writing the II PU/XII exams.
Subjects: The course curriculum is almost similar to PU Syllabus and a student who would have studied Accounts, Economics, Mathematics & Statistics would have already covered around 250 marks out of 400 marks in CA Foundation:
1. Accounting
2. Business Laws
3. Quantitative Aptitude (Business Mathematics, Logical Reasoning & Statistics)
4. Business Economics
Examination: The CA Foundation examinations are held twice a year, usually in June and December. ICAI has proposed to conduct CA Foundation exams thrice in a year for which clear details and date of implementation are yet to be announced. The exams are conducted in a pen-paper mode.
Examination Pattern: Each paper in the CA Intermediate Exam is for 100 marks. Students need to score a minimum of 40% marks in each paper and should also obtain a minimum of 50% marks in aggregate from all the four papers.
Paper 1 & 2 will have 70 marks descriptive answers and 30 marks objectives. Paper 3 & 4 will have 100 marks objectives only with negative valuation of 0.25 marks for each incorrect answer.
Preparation: PU/XII students are of very tender age and on their way of maturity towards the real world. They are highly curious and one needs to channelize their curiosity towards the conceptual understanding of the subjects and also to train them on the methods of writing a professional exam.

Articleship: After clearing CA Foundation and CA Intermediate Exam, students are required to undergo two years of articleship training under a practicing Chartered Accountant.
Career Opportunities: The recognition among peer, enhanced self confidence and societal appreciation are the benefits rather then career opportunities. Passing CA Foundation permits to register for CA Intermediate which otherwise requires graduation for registration and hence saves around 2.5 years in the process.
